Diversification:
This relates to the policy of spreading the portfolio over different securities as well as a variety of industries and countries provides a virtually perfect means of diversification for large and small investors. Some managements have shown considerable foresight in getting out of markets which have exhausted their possibilities and into others which have dynamic opportunities of growth. Equal expertise has been shown in geographic diversification, most companies having substantial investments in North America (where econo¬mic prospects are fair) as opposed to Africa (where political upheavals have seriously undermined investment confid¬ence).
Another unfavourable feature for the investor with a low tax liability is that repayment claims must usually be re¬stricted, because as a result of substantial investments abroad the net U.K. tax rate which limits such claims is well below the standard rate.
Despite these handicaps and the imperative fact that it may be difficult if not impossible to maintain future progress at the same happy pace as in recent years, investment trust equities are a useful holding for investors who prefer to leave the experts to look after the management of a portfolio.
